Doubles Knockout

Hi folks, I have a confession to make. I thought there was no need for prelims in the doubles, but realised yesterday I'd missed 5 entries out. So now we have 37 entries, not 32!
The draw has been re-done today, and we need to squeeze 5 prelims in before the 1st round proper. It's not a problem if any 1st round games have to be pushed back because of the prelims. The 2nd round is not scheduled until the New Year.

Week 5 Fixtures

Singles Knockout - 1st Round

Singles Knockout 1st Round - Monday 4th November 2019.
I can see there will be problems squeezing all these games into one night, especially at Lashings, and to some extent, The Hare & Hounds and Civil Service Club too.
Feel free to rearrange your match for another night if you wish. I will help with contact details if needed, but please make your arrangements by Saturday 2nd November 8pm at the latest, or your opponent may claim the game for late cancellation.
All I ask is that all results are with me by the end of November. The 2nd round is due to be played during December, before Christmas.
Thanks to Ryan & Dani at the Fox for assisting with the prelim & 1st round draws.

Singles Knockout - Preliminary Round

Singles Knockout - Preliminary Round - Tuesday 22nd October 2019.
71 entries this year, so 7 prelims to get the number down to 64 for the 1st round proper. As always...IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PRELIM, YOU ARE THROUGH TO THE 1ST ROUND! (Sorry, but I have to say it every year!)

Winter AGM Update

Thanks to everyone that attended the meeting last night at the Hare & Hounds. A few teams still need to confirm their knockout entries. This information should be passed to Bertie as soon as possible, so he can collect the fees, and let me know the names for the preliminary round draws.
No major issues were raised. The Committee will stay the same, Bertie as Chairman, myself as Secretary and Anthony as Treasurer.
We have 22 teams for the Winter season, the same as last year. So again these will be divided into two divisions of 11, each team will have 10 home and 10 away matches, with 2 byes.
The season will start on MONDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2019. There will be two free weeks for rearranged games, one just before Christmas (Mon 23rd Dec) and another at the end of the season (Mon 27th Apr). This will be the LAST DAY for League games to be played. There will be a week with no games in between Christmas and New Year (Mon 30th Dec).
There are a couple of team changes due to mergers/relocation from last Winter. The only team 'new' to the Winter League this year is Drakes, who joined us in the Summer. The two old Duke of Marlborough teams have merged to become Duke 'B'. The old Eagle B team have relocated to the Duke of Marlborough, to become Duke 'A'. The old Dog & Gun team have relocated to the Civil Service Club, and become Civil 'C'.
The bottom three teams in Division 1 last Winter, dropping down to Division 2 are Century Club, Dog & Gun (Civil C) and Papermakers Arms.
The top three teams in Division 2 last Winter, promoted to Division 1 are The Fox Loud, The Fox, and Lashings D.
Drakes, as a new team, will start in Division 2.
No rule changes were proposed. Everyone seems happy with the 8pm start time, so that will continue. The 'No Talking' rule continues in doubles matches, only talking at the start of the visit, and the first shot after the break. Some teams may still talk if it's mutually agreed at the start of the match, but most teams have been sticking to the 'no talk' rule, so it's good practice to do that.
As was the case in the Summer, postponed/rearranged games require 48 hours notice (ie. Saturday night 8pm). If less notice is given, it will be the other team's choice whether they want to rearrange, or claim a 6-0 win (8 points). Any unplayed games at the end of the season will be awarded as 6-0 wins. No 'double headers' will be allowed.
It was decided that if a team drops out at any point in the season, all the points will be removed. This is the fairest option, as some games would've been played at home, some away.
I think that about covers everything. Any queries, get in touch with Bertie or myself.
Have a good season...Cheers!

Winter 2019-20 Season

Looking ahead to the forthcoming Winter season, Bertie will be delivering registration forms to venues over the coming weekend. As always, captains can get ahead by downloading and printing off the new form from the Facebook Group, if you prefer.
There are a couple of changes to the form this season, with regard to knockout competitions. Firstly, the Veterans age has been reduced to 55 (does that mean Troy & Bertie are eligible?  )
Secondly, and more importantly, in my opinion, I am asking that everyone who enters the knockouts provides a contact number. Last year was a bloody nightmare, when people were drawn against each other, and neither was on Facebook, and neither wanted to give out a phone number, and I had to relay messages through half a dozen people to get games organised. That won't be happening this year. I cannot organise everyone's individual games for them. If you're entering, give me a number that your opponent can contact you on, so you can arrange your matches yourselves. If you don't want to be contactable to arrange your game, don't enter. Can't say fairer than that, right?
Anyway, registration will be at the Winter Season AGM on TUESDAY 17th SEPTEMBER 2019 at the HARE & HOUNDS, from 8pm onwards.

Summer 2019 AGM Update

Thank you to all the team representatives that turned up for our Summer AGM at the Duke of Marlborough on Tuesday 14th May 2019. What follows is a summary of the points which you voted for at the meeting.

The Committee

The Committee will stay the same. Bertie is the League Chairman, Stacey is the Fixtures Secretary, and Ant is the Treasurer. Dave Laffan and Steve Humphries are also committee members.

Summer Format

We will be playing the usual summer format, 4 groups of teams, mixed division 1 and 2, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the Summer Cup knockout stage, and 3
rd and 4th placed teams going through to the Consolation Cup knockout stage. There will be one week available for rearranged matches at the end of the group stage. Any other rearranged games will need to be fitted in on another night before the end of the group stage. No games can be cancelled in the knockout stage.

Amendments voted on at the AGM

  • Matches will now start at 8.00pm. The team sheet needs to be completed and ready to start at this time. If a team arrives late, the opponents are entitled to claim a game for each 15 minutes that a team is late. Please be sensible and try to keep it friendly! If the first player is there, the match can start.
  • 48 hours notice for cancelled games needs to be given. In other words, Bertie or Stacey need to be notified by 8pm on the Saturday preceding the game.
  • Cancelled games with less than 48 hours notice can be claimed, or rearranged before the end of the group stage, at the opponent's discretion. Any unfulfilled matches will be awarded as 6-0 wins (8 points). Remember, a game can still be played and won with as few as four players. One of the reasons this league exists is to encourage trade at your venue on a quiet night. Cancelling games does no favours to the venue or your team.
  • No 'double-headers' will be allowed, under any circumstances. Unplayed games will be awarded points, as above.
  • If a table is deemed unplayable, as it is not reasonably level, a team has a right to postpone the match until a time that the table has been adjusted. Most tables can be adjusted on the night, but please be aware that we try to be a friendly league and you are not at The Crucible. We know some tables get moved. The table is the same for both teams.
  • Teams that drop out of the League – All points will be removed unless a team has played every opponent in their group/division at least once. In this case, points will be removed back to the halfway stage. Claimed games will not count as played games.
  • Neutral venues will continue to be chosen for Semi's and Finals. We will ask for neutral volunteers to referee finals in individual and doubles finals, and their decisions will stand. Referees will not generally be needed for team games, as there are more spectators.

Summer 2019 Season

The Summer season will start on Monday 3rd June 2019.
This season we will be welcoming two new venues to our League, The Coach House (formerly the Queen Anne) and Drakes. Good to have you on board!
For those new teams (and any other new players to the league), we play what we call the 'old rules'. A copy of the rules can be downloaded and printed from the 'Files' section of this group.
Matches are usually played with 6 players, but more can be used. Teams play 6 singles games and 3 doubles games. Matches are usually played in the following order; 2 singles, 1 doubles, 2 singles, 1 doubles, 2 singles, 1 doubles. Each player can play in a maximum of 1 singles and 1 doubles.
Food is provided by the home team for division/group games only. No food is required for knockout games as not all 9 games need to be played. In knockout games, the first team to 5, wins. Most teams will do a football card to contribute to the food costs for the venue.
If you have any other questions, just ask! An update on points raised at the AGM will follow, and a copy will be included with the Fixture List, which I will be sorting out shortly.
